‘Robert Downey Jr. makes boy cry because he did not get to meet Iron Man’

I like this photograph.

Apart from its obvious charm it illustrates the comparative element in emotions. In this case, the boy imagined he was going to meet Iron Man but got to meet Robert Downey Jr instead. Compared to the imagined hero, the actor proved a major disappointment.

It also illustrates one function of crying. It gets the attention of others and with any luck someone will help. The look of helpless distress on Downey’s face is priceless.

It was the comparison, not Downey, that ‘made’ the boy cry.
